FOUR TIPS TO EVEN BETTER DESIGN MadeWithBalloons™

Winners Circle Trade Show Booth made with sheets of latex balloons glued together

Photo of Graham Rouse with name underneath

———————————————————————–

“Even as good as this award winning trade show booth design is,
it can be built easier, faster and stronger
if we Just Rouse It
” with these 4 tips.

———————————————————————-

THIS DESIGN

This booth won a top award for design at a large trade show some years ago. In fact, it is was so far “ago” (in the past) that it was before RMS (Rouse Matrix Systems) and before Glue Dots.

The sheets of latex balloons that make up the roof and the backdrop for this booth were made using rubber cement to glue the balloons together. The results were great, as you can see in the photographs above and below, but it was very slow and tedious work compared to what we can do today if we Just Rouse It.

Today, we can build it easier, faster and stronger.

You can use the same four JustRouseIt tips to make your next backdrop or air canopy easier, faster and stronger.

Winners Circle Trade Show Booth made with sheets of latex balloons glued togetherinners Circle Trade Show Booth made with sheets of latex balloons glued together

COMMON TODAY

It is common these days (2015) to build sheets of balloons with garlands of balloons wrapped around some central line or rod and then tied together side by side. That may be faster than sticking balloons together in a single layer, but takes at least twice as many balloons, makes for a very bulky structure and reduces the translucency that adds so much to the character of this design.

A metal, double frame system like SDS (Skistimas Design System) is excessively heavy for the overhead work in this project.  It is also a square grid system that is not practical for many triangular designs, including this one.

The new, square GRIDZ products are much lighter, less expensive and the GRIDZ Soft Pak version can be adapted without too much hassle for 45 degree angles.  But, this design features 30 degree and 60 degree angles.  They are an awkward fit, at best, for square grids..

(TIP #1) USE R-E-A-L™ HONEYCOMB BALLOON GRID FRAMES

Rouse-Expand-And-Load™ (R-E-A-L™) honeycomb (RMS™ hexagon) balloon grid frames are a natural fit for the 30/60 degree angles. They are also as light weight, expandable and even more economical than the GRIDZ Soft Pak squares.

The video below gives you a short (3 minute) introduction to R-E-A-L™. Balloon Art with RMS™ Banners.

Rouse Matrix™ Builders are the RMS™ modular panels that we recommend for the canopy project shown in the photos. They work in the same way as the RMS™ Banners shown in the video, but Builders hold balloons inflated 8″ rather than 4″.

The Builders come two panels in a package.  Each panel expands to a nominal size of 3′ by 6. You may order RMS Builders online at http://www.bvsmall.com/builder.

(TIP #2) BUILD A GRAPH PAPER MODEL

Download and use RMS builder graph paper to plan your design as a 3-D model.

The roof is the most difficult part. Your model might look something like this.

Eight equilateral triangles made from RMS Builders are folded in the middle and then connected to form the sixteen triangular panels of the roof.

Eight equilateral triangles made from RMS Builders are folded in the middle and then connected to form the sixteen triangular panels of the roof.

Generally, any design, flat or 3-D, that you make out of RMS graph paper can be built with the matching Rouse Matrix and balloons 24 times larger than the model..

(TIP #3) USE RouseAPPS™ FAST TECHNIQUE

We often refer to Applications of Rouse original technologies as RouseAPPS™. Our patented RouseAPPS FAST Technique (or “Speed Graphics”) uses strings of double-ended balloons like Quick Link Balloons™ or Link-O-Loons™. Each balloon is rolled into an opening in a balloon grid frame that is adjacent to the previous balloon. This can be especially fast.

It also makes the resulting single layer sheet of balloons stronger and more stable than if made with individual balloons or pairs of balloons. Each balloon is secured by being anchored on two ends to another balloon. This additional anchoring is one of the Rouse patented aspects of this technique. The video below shows how it is done.

(TIP #4) USE RouseAPPS™ PT FOLD TECHNIQUE

When you load balloons into the Rouse Matrix panels you normally center the balloons in the framework with half the balloon on one side of the frame and half on the other side. When you fold the framework up or down in this design it is better to push the balloons mostly through the Matrix from the inside of the fold to the outside of the fold.

Do this only along the edge of the fold. The balloons try to escape to the outside of the fold. They cannot escape that way, however, because they are anchored to two adjacent balloons via the inside of the fold.

This patented Push Through (PT) Fold technique allows adjacent balloons along opposite sides of the fold to move closer together creating a sharp crease in the sheet of balloons. It is neat and efficient.

INSPIRATION IN THE WIND MadeWIthBalloons™

"Just Rouse It" logo - icon with purple borders & white corners 250 x 250INSPIRATION IN THE WIND
MadeWithBalloons™

This delightful graphic MadeWithBalloons™ was inspired by a painting.

The balloon graphic was originally designed by Graham and Mary Queen Rouse for the 2002 International Balloons Arts Convention (IBAC). IBAC was, for 20 years, the annual, premier international balloon convention and the precursor to the World Balloon Convention currently held every other year by Pioneer Balloon Company.

Snapshot of the painting that inspired the "Sailing Into Summer" design MadeWithBalloons™The painting to the left, chosen by Rocky Toomey, was the inspiration for the design above. It was one of a group of paintings reproduced with balloons in Rouse Matrix™ Expand-And-Load™ balloon frames for the final night gala gallery of balloon art.

Installed version of "Sailing Into Summer" design MadeWithBalloons™

.

.

The final version (9′ by 12′) was installed for the event (to the right) was a simplified version of the design above.

Many of the “Split Apertures” were sacrificed to save time.

.

RouseAPPS™ Split Aperture Techniques

refer to a variety of Rouse methods for filling an opening in the Matrix with more than one balloon so that thinner lines could be drawn and curves smoothed out. They can be very effective but do require extra materials and effort.

You may download free instructions for Split Apertures from this link.

RouseAPPS™ Slit Aperture instructions

RouseAPPS™ SIMPLE Technique

Most balloons were loaded using the Rouse patented SIMPLE technique. Pairs of round balloons are loaded with one balloon of each pair being rolled into adjacent openings. It is very simple and effective but patented for use exclusively with official, Rouse branded balloon grid frames.

Here is a short video on how it is done.

Here is the plan for how the balloons were laid out for  this project using the RouseAPPS SIMPLE Technique. Select the picture to download a full sized copy for review and printing.

GETTING BETTER

IBAC 2002 was a great experience and we produced some fine balloon art for the final night gala, but I do wish that we had then the knowledge, skills, balloons and tools we have today. We could have done it all so much more easily and quickly

The Conwin inflators were a great boon then and we still use them today, but the newer versions of the Split Second Dual Sizer are easier to use.

The Rouse Matrix™ we used then was in about the second generation. We are now into the “G-4”, fourth generation. RMS™ G-4 is thinner, lighter, more compact, translucent, holds balloons better, connects more easily and securely, is easy on the hands, costs less in uninflated dollars and comes in a gazillion variations (well, really only 140+, but that is still a lot).

Double-ended balloons such as Link-O-Loons™ and Quick Link Balloons™ were not around.  Bee bodies (#321 balloons) we available but in only one, small size and limited colors. Link-O-Loons™ were just being developed in Mexico and Australia; and Quick Link Balloons™ were still more than a decade away.

.

RouseAPPS™ FAST Technique

As good as the SIMPLE technique is, there is now an even better technique when you have long rows of balloons to be loaded. This would have worked especially well on our sailboat graphic.

The Rouse patented FAST Technique (“Speed Graphics”) uses strings of double-ended balloons. Each balloon in a string is rolled into the next adjacent opening in a row or column of openings in the Rouse -Expand-And-Load™ (R-E-A-L™) balloon grid frame. Again, this is an application of a Rouse (RouseAPPs™) technique patented for use exclusively with official Rouse branded balloon grid frames.

Loading balloons in long strings is much faster than loading in singles or in pairs. As an added benefit, each balloon is anchored on two ends to another balloon. The result is a display that is more secure.as well as faster to construct.

Here is how it is done:

COMBINING ADVANCES

If we had then, the advanced equipment, balloons, expandable frames and FAST techniques of today; we could easily have saved between 50% and 90% of the time we spent loading balloons. And, that would have been a lot of time saved considering the scale of the decorations for the gala.

No telling what marvelous things we might have added to the decor with all those extra man hours.

No telling what marvelous things you might add to your decor or additional profits you might add to your bank account by using these same advances in your balloon work today.

We wish you luck and recommend these resources to help you get under way:

TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN

 (1)  SKETCH, LOAD & TRIM

You get a good idea of how to make your own custom shapes like logos or these masks from this article online:  HOW TO CREATE A CUSTOM SHAPED LOGO MadeWithBalloons™ – IT’S EASY AS (1), (2), (3).   In our case the basic designs are already done for you above. But, you may prefer to make your own designs.  In that case download RMS Banner graph paper and use it to lay out your ideas.

It takes four RMS™ Banner panels (2 packages) to make the 5′ design and eight panels (4 packages) to make the 8′ design .

.(2) RouseAPPS™ SPLIT APERTURE Techniques.

Some openings in the designs above are half the size of most of the openings. You will find Rouse “split aperture” techniques especially helpful for creating and filling these smaller openings.

Select the pictures below to download split aperture instructions.

RouseAPPS™ Slit Aperture instructions

.(3) RouseAPPS™ SIMPLE Technique

The balloons were loaded in pairs for the mask projects with one balloon of each pair being rolled into adjacent openings in the frames. This is a patented technique for use exclusively with official Rouse branded balloon grid frames. It worked beautifully for this project. See the three minute video below for details on how to make it work for you..

.

(4) RouseAPPS™ FAST Technique

As good as the SIMPLE technique is, there is now one even better technique when you have long rows of balloons to be loaded. This would have worked especially well on the larger of the two masks, but double-ended balloons (Quick Link Balloons™) were not available in 2007.

The Rouse patented FAST Technique (“Speed Graphics”) uses strings of double-ended balloons. Each balloon in a string is rolled into the next adjacent opening in a row of openings in the Rouse -Expand-And-Load™ (R-E-A-L™) balloon grid frame.

Loading balloons in long strings is much faster than loading in singles or in pairs. As an added benefit, each balloon is anchored on two ends to another balloon. The result is a display that is more secure.as well as faster to construct.

Here is how it is done:

Now you know how to make your own masks, (1) sketch your design on RMS Banner graph paper, (2) get some RMS Banners (3) load balloons according to your plans (4) Cut away the extra Matrix with scissors. (5) Share pictures right here in the “Leave A Reply” section below.

I will be watching, listening and hoping to join you for your TIKI ISLAND GETAWAY MadewithBalloons™.

It was a fantasy come alive for the children (and I think for the adults, too).  It was a University of South Carolina sponsored  event to celebrate children’s education. The Library Train brought in refreshments. Books were on display as well.  A lot of children wanted to play engineer.

Standard tables served as the basic structures. We covered them with yellow and red sheets of corrugated plastic.  The smaller wheels were Geo balloons. The “coal car” was full of small round balloons.

The red engine was a cylinder made from whole RMS Banners. The face on the front was a 3′ Smiley balloon. The green “Cow Catcher” along with the engineer’s cabin and yellow smoke stack were shapes cut from RMS Banners.

It was a colorful and delightful display. And, we were able to save the corrugated plastic for other projects later.

You get a good idea of how to make your own custom shapes like the cow catch and smoke stack and engineer’s cabin from this article online:  HOW TO CREATE A CUSTOM SHAPED LOGO MadeWithBalloons™ – IT’S EASY AS (1), (2), (3).   Since this is a sculpture project rather than a flat one, I suggest that you go one step further than suggested in the article.   Build a  three dimensional model of  your design with the RMS Banner graph paper rather than just flat panels.

(2) RouseAPPS™ SIMPLE Technique

The balloons were loaded in pairs in this project with one balloon of each pair being rolled into adjacent openings in the frames. This is a patented technique for use exclusively with official Rouse branded balloon grid frames. It worked beautifully for this project. See the three minute video below for details on how to make it work for you..

(3) RouseAPPS™ FAST Technique

As good as the SIMPLE technique is, there is now one even better for the cylinder that makes up the engine. The patented FAST technique works especially well where you have longer rows of balloons to be loaded. It is also especially helpful where you have curved surfaces like the cylinder.

When balloons are loaded into curved sheets in single layers, the balloons are squeezed on the inside of the curve. This squeeze tries to force the balloons out of the apertures (grid openings) toward the outside of the curves. When you use the FAST technique shown in the video below, simply load the balloons from the inside of the curve. The balloons cannot escape to the outside of the curve.

And did I mention?; When you get good at this technique, it is fast, really FAST!

Now you know how to get started, so, (1) sketch your design on RMS Banner graph paper, (2) get some RMS Banners (3) go build your train. (4) Share pictures right here in the “Leave A Reply” section below.

I will be watching and listening for your Whooo, Whooo, Toot, Toot” MadeWithBalloons™

SOMETIMES YOU WANT A SQUARE, A HEXAGON OR BOTH
MadeWithBalloons™
.

Brazilian balloon artist, Adriana Sedlak, chose both square grids and hexagon (honeycomb) grids for her under the sea scene above and below. It was produced recently with the help of students in her class at the Ideias Gigantes balloon convention in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Rouse Matrix™ (or a Brazilian copy) often shows up in her classes and work in the form of custom shaped designs. In this project you see custom shapes like the dolphin, whale, mermaid, anchor and fish made with RMS™.

It is easy and cost effective to sketch out a design on honeycomb graph paper. Follow your sketch design when you load balloons into the honeycomb grid. Use scissors to cut away the extra Matrix around your design. That is not so easy and inexpensive to do with stiff plastic or rigid metal frames.

See the process illustrated and animated in this article: HOW TO CREATE A CUSTOM SHAPED LOGO MadeWithBalloons™ – IT’S EASY AS (1), (2), (3).

The triple axis of the hexagon grid (versus two for the square grid) also make it easier to get the smooth curve of the dolphin’s back and the flow of the mermaid’s hair.

Adriana makes effective use of square grids for the background. The change in grid pattern helps to make the honeycomb based figures in front stand out. And, the switch in frames gives students a more diverse experience at the same time.

It is not clear to me from the photos whether the background is made with stiff plastic squares, wire grids or copies of the Rouse REAL GRIDZ Soft Pak™ frames. Any of the three would work well here.

A third layer of texture and diversity shows up in details throughout the project..

Life preservers, starfish, crabs, seaweed and other twisted tidbits add to this colorful and lively undersea environment.

Congratulations Adriana Sedlak and to your students. It is a job well done!

A QUICK LOOK AT “FAST” MadeWithBalloons™

RE-A-L™ Balloon Art Is 'FAST" illustration / icon

.

A QUICK LOOK AT “FAST” MadeWithBalloons™

—  by Graham Rouse  —

.

JustRouseIt™ logoThis is a quick look at how to decorate with balloons
faster, A LOT FASTER!

These tools and techniques do not apply to every job, of course. They do apply to many decorating projects .

Once you start using the RE-A-L™ tools and techniques demonstrated here, you will find yourself using them more and more often, because as you gain experience they become easier and easier, faster and faster, more and more profitable, more and more  fun.

In the beginning, start with signs or banners of 100 to 300 balloons. Then, graduate to backdrops, walls and murals of 300 to 1000 balloons.

Next, stretch your imagination and skills. Take on entrances, tunnels, canopies and sculptures using the same basic “Speed Graphics” techniques you will see demonstrated here.

There is more after that. You will learn variations and more advanced techniques to add to your knowledge base and your skill set. They will all contribute to advance your art and business MadeWithBalloons™.

SPEED GRAPHICS

We begin here with and American flag of under 300 balloons. Projects of this scale can become routine and profitable for you at relatively low cost to the customer once you learn how to assemble them in 15 to 30 minutes instead of an hour or two. This video demonstrates how it can be done in 5 to 6 minutes

Impressive, isn’t it? You saw loading speeds of over 3,000 balloons per hour! That is all the more impressive when you realize that someone using standard nested garland (precision wall) techniques would have to load balloons at over 6,000 balloons per hour in order to keep up. Nested garland techniques require twice as many balloons.

.

A CLOSER LOOK

You saw above how fast Rouse Speed Graphics™ can be. Now, let’s take a closer look at how to handle those balloons to get such impressive results.

.

WORLD RECORD WITH RMS™ BUILDERS

You might imagine that things slow down when you work with larger balloons. Maybe, but it definitely did not slow down Eduardo Seiti in his world record performance with RMS™ Builders shown below.

.

CAN YOU DO IT TOO?

The men in these videos have a head start on you. It will take good technique and practice to come close to their speeds.

It is normal, however, for relative beginners to improve their speed two to four times using Speed Graphics over speeds they are used to when loading single balloons or pairs into other grids.

Hands-on training with an expert will get you to those really high speeds faster. But, you should be able to make significant progress by observing these videos and emulating their example.

.

GET STARTED

Use Rouse Expand-And-Load (RE-A-L™) balloon frames together with Rouse patented “Speed Graphics” techniques.

There is no licensing charge when you use the two together.

WORLD FLAGS MadeWithBalloons™ For Profit & Practice

FLAGS ARE A NATURAL WITH RMS™.”  by Mary Queen Rouse

Flags MadeWithBalloons™ are a great way to work on your RMS balloon graphic design skills, to improve those skills and to enhance your balloon decorating profits.

  • Many flag designs are straight forward and quite simple. Customers love flags. A flag makes customers feel as if you have customized something just for them. “It’s a good thing” (AKA Martha Rouse).

  • Many flags are as easy as one-two-three: that’s just three stripes of three different colors. What an easy way to produce an easy, sparkling balloon decoration! I’m definitely for that, aren’t you?

  • The French Flag is a good example of a very easy three color flag. Please see below.

Figure #1. FRENCH FLAG DESIGN (Straight Lines Are Horizontal)Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load framework for makikng a flag of France with balloons

  • Notice that the straight lines of the RMS Framework only go in one direction. (Horizontally) One can opt to leave the vertical lines of the French Flag as zig-zags.

Figure #2. FRENCH FLAG (Straight Lines Are Vertical).Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load framework flag of France made with balloons

  • See what happens to the lines! Now we have straight vertical lines, with zig -zags on the top and on the bottom.

.

TEST YOUR DESIGN:

  • Sometimes it’s hard to visualize how a design is going to look. A good way to test the design, is to layout the design first on our special RMS Graph Paper. You can practice your balloon graphic design in both directions on graph paper, and then decide which direction is the best for your design.

.

.

RMS SPLIT APERTURE TECHNIQUE:

  • If we go back to the our original French Flag design, it is possible to further refine the French Flag if you choose to. One of the techniques we use quite often with flags and other Rouse Balloon Graphics, is the RMS Split Aperture (Hole) Technique.
  • Aperture (Graham word!) means “hole”. It is possible to “split” the aperture (hole) of the RMS framework by inserting a number of smaller balloon bubbles into the same hole. In the case of the French Flag, the result is a straight vertical line in the French Flag. Also, the ends of the flag are also straight. Please see below.

Figure #3. FRENCH FLAG WITH STRAIGHT HORIZONTAL LINES AND SPLIT APERTURES OPT IN:

Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load framework for flag of France made with balloons

  • In the case of our French Flag, I think I would opt for my straight lines to be horizontal (as they are above). Also, I would opt for a combo of scenarios on my “Splits”. I would use RMS Split Apertures between the red, white and blue (as in Figure #3); but, I would leave the zig-zag ends (as in Figure #1) because I think the zig-zags make the flag appear to be waving in the breeze. Ultimately, these choices are up to you, the Balloon Artist. This is where your Balloon Artistry comes into play, and where the finished piece becomes your Art.

.

HOW BIG? HOW FAR?

  • The other thing we might want to consider about the French Flag design, is how big it will be and the distance from which it will be viewed. If our French Flag is going to be large and in a gym or coliseum or outdoors, I’d go with Figure #1 in a flash and forget it. Not doing the “Splits” will save us tons of time/work (translation $$$) and from a distance, it won’t matter.
  • IS IT WORTH IT? Flags are also a good exercise in working with the RMS Split Aperture Technique. This technique is helpful not only because it aids in making straight lines, but also because it helps with detail. Practice with RMS flags will be good practice for your more complicated RMS Balloon Graphic Designs in the future. The balloon artist ultimately has to decide whether it will make a difference in the piece (balloon decoration) or if the refinement will make ALL the difference. In other words…. Is it worth it?Here is the link to the RMS Split Aperture Instructions:

.

HOW TO SELL FRENCH FLAGS:

  • The French are very patriotic and fly their flag everywhere. If you are in The States, consider making The French Flag for any French themed prom. It goes well with the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triumph, a French Pastry Shoppe, a Bonaparte Ball, etc. And what about all of those French Restaurants? Don’t forget! Summer may be a down time for balloons, but that doesn’t mean it’s a down time for everyone! Go sell!
  • LINK TO BUY RMS BANNERS FOR FLAGS

.

  • ANOTHER EASY FLAG:Rouse Matrix, Expand-And-Load framework flag of Italy made with balloons

QUESTIONS FOR THE ITALIAN FLAG.

  • The Italian flag is also an easy flag. See how the straight lines of the RMS are in one direction only? How are the vertical lines managed? Would you use the RMS Split Aperture Technique everywhere? Or would you let the zig-zags go? What would the impact be if the vertical lines were straight? How does production time factor into your budget parameters? Are extensive refinements worth the time? Remember those dollars! Is good OK? Why not test the idea on RMS Graph Paper? Here is the link for RMS Banner Graph Paper:Banner Graph paper link

.

HOW TO SELL ITALIAN FLAGS:

  • OK. Most of us reading this newsletter do not live in Italy. Nonetheless, just think of all of the Italian themed parties where the Italian Flag could be used as part of your balloon decorations! I’m thinking spaghetti dinners (Every church has one!), all of those Italian restaurant CHAINS, pizza CHAINS, etc. With this many options for the Italian Flag, we ought not have ANY trouble selling the Italian Flag idea here in The States! Go sell!!!
  • LINK TO BUY RMS BANNERS FOR FLAGS.

.

  • ANOTHER EASY FLAG:Rosue Matrix, Expand-And-Load framework flag of Mexico made with balloons
  • The Mexican Flag is basically easy. We have the same three colors/sections/stripes that we have in the French and Italian Flags. The Mexican Flag is just as easy as the flags above, EXCEPT for the emblem.
  • This is where you have to stop and think. We know that we can make the stripes of color on the flag, right? They are just like the stripes on the French and Italian Flags? Go sell!!!LINK TO BUY

DECISIONS DECISIONS:

  • The emblem, however, is a very complicated design. Rouse International has always used a overlay for this emblem. We COULD make the emblem out of balloons and RMS, but it is so detailed that the emblem itself would have to be really big and still have LOTS of RMS Split Apertures. In order to keep the integrity of scale of the flag, the Mexican Flag itself would have to be
  • H-U-G-E. Sometimes an emblem or a logo is just not practical as a balloon decoration.
  • You can learn to be discerning about your designs. Practice will help you learn how to decide if a logo or emblem is maybe too complicated for your balloon decoration, or at least not worth the time and effort for the budget. The truth is, that some logos ARE too complicated to be practical to make with balloons or balloons and RMS. Balloons are basically “large”, and when one is looking for detail for balloon decorations, it can be a challenge.
  • Most detail can be ultimately be done with balloons, but the time and effort may price you out of the market for the design. Further, I think that sometimes it is better to have contrasting textures with our balloons and other materials. For me, the contrast often makes the balloons stand out more in balloon decorations, and that’s what we want!
  • Decision time on the Mexican Flag. If it were me, I’d use the overlay.

.

WHAT PRACTICE DOES FOR ME:

  • I always find that I do much better if I have practiced so I know what I am doing. This might be true for you as well. My confidence level goes WAY up.
  • I also like to be in my own space, by myself, when I am working on a design. It’s easier for me to think if there aren’t a bunch of people asking me questions – especially if I am working on something new and have a deadline.
  • Yikes! Is your business slow right now? It could be just because it’s the summer. It could be because of the economy. No matter.
  • Take advantage of a slow time. Use the summer wisely and make your business conditions work for you, not against you.Why not consider starting now to work on your RMS Balloon Graphics Skills?
  • Summer is always a good time for Graham and me to work on special projects. They say that one way to beat the recession is to streamline your operation, incorporate new ideas and services and make changes.
  • You can do all of these things, AND pump up your summer business, by starting to work on your RMS Balloon Graphic Skills. Add RMS Balloon Graphic Design to your repertoire this summer.
  • Consider going ahead and ordering some Rouse now so that you can practice leisurely, have time for questions (Call us anytime at: 1.877.GO.ROUSE) and then go sell with confidence!
